When I heard there was a exhibition of Scandinavian furniture design at the National Gallery Victoria, I banked the trip for a rainy day. Today was miserable, so we went to check it out.
I used to walk round vintage markets in London choosing the pieces that I’d furnish my flat with, only to look at the price tags and think “hmm, one day”. Well, that day is still a while off but I still like to take a look when the opportunity presents itself.
I’ve always had a thing for the minimalist aesthetic and pleasing use of colour and materials of the furniture from this time. ‘Nordic Cool’ at the NGV, is exhibiting pieces from 1920’s-1960’s and isn’t just limited to the type of design you sit on. Theres also ceramics, glass, lighting and textiles to have a gander at and it’s a little more interactive than Tumblr.
You’ll probably return to your home with an urge to throw away your current cheap furniture but if by the end, your appreciation for chairs and ceramics is still lacking then theres plenty more to check out around the gallery.
