Tall Timber

Nothing makes a good Sunday without a decent Brunch date included, it should become a obligatory rule for every weekend without question. Seriously I literally love nothing more than waking up nice and early, throwing on some workout clothes and skipping breezily past someone doing the walk of shame and then just walking around the Botanical Gardens or along the beach until my stomachs growling like a feral animal and it’s time to feast. Sounds pretty perfect right? If anythings going to put you in a good mood for the day I think this has to be it and just think by the time you’ve exercised and eaten most people haven’t even managed to crawl out of bed. So you can feel nice and smug as you consider making Tall Timber you’re next Melbourne breakfast spot… This little cafe kept popping up all over the place until we finally decided it was a sign and since we’d only heard good things it would be silly not to see what it had to offer. It’s pretty small …

Lately (In July & August)

What’s that saying ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’? Couldn’t agree more especially when they come courtesy of Jonny, he got embarrased when he saw I wrote this but I don’t care, the guys really good. So if you’re sat here with a cuppa watching endless youtube videos then hit pause and check out some of his latest work on his personal website ‘None-Other’ here. Here’s a little look at some of his recent photographs… But wait, just before you go and do that here’s a little recap on some of the stuff we have been up to since we got back from Indonesia if you’re interested, and yeah so most of it’s food related but since that’s pretty much what we do with the majority of our time then what can you do. Do you recognise any of these places in Melbourne?

Little Big Sugar Salt

7 weeks away from our self challenged Melbourne Brunch mission simply means we have 7 weeks of breakfasts to make up for and after almost 2months of suspicious omelettes and banana pancakes I think a Smashed Avo is more than deserved. A quick Instagram stalk later and Sunday morning a tired and hangry Jonny was being dragged up Chapel Street to Little Big Sugar Salt. The night before the girls and I had one of our dinner dates, the first since I’d returned and somehow that one drink we all promised shockingly somehow turned into a few bottles, being the last table in the restaurant and finally being asked to leave. Ooops. And I don’t drink, one drink hits me the equivalent of a full on bender and I had TWO glasses…so lets just say when we arrived at LBSS and had a not unexpected 15 minute wait there was no way I was loitering anywhere without a large coffee firmly glued to my hand, don’t quite agree with my latte on this one though, …

Seminyak, Bali

O Seminyak, where do we start with you aye? I think we knew what to expect before we even arrived, our opinion had pretty much been made, yes unfair I know but to be honest we were spot on so there. Seminyak is the definitition of your coupley-two week-package holiday destination. You’ve worked hard, you have 14 precious days holiday, you want to travel but no time, you want luxury, you want to relax, you want to be able to say you did Bali, just without the backpack, well Seminyak apparently is the answer. It’s deemed as the ‘luxury’ area of Bali… the strip of resorts each bigger than the terminal at the airport was the first clue, the security guards manning the pools were the next. How’s a girl meant to slip in for a quick dip if Hulk Hogans blocking the route for us peasants? We took a little scooter ride from our temporary base in Canggu to visit here for the day, to tick it off more than anything, I mean it was near …

Lucky Penny

It’s creeping scarily quickly into winter here in Melbourne. Something I never thought we’d have to face after escaping the tropical climates of England, definitely not what we signed up for on the big Aus adventure… I’ve decided I’m one of those people who has that seasonal mood thing. It gets cold. I get miserable. I’d literally avoid any evening activity if it meant staying in the warmth of my bed. Wild I know. The other night Jonny dragged me kicking and screaming out of the flat for dinner. I hadn’t been feeling too good and we were both in one of those annoying moods where we couldn’t decide what we fancied or make a decision to save our lives but it was way to cold to walk up and down looking for somewhere, not if Jonny wanted an enjoyable evening anyway. Thankfully Lucky Penny is close enough to endure the frostbite and they opened up last week in the evenings with little share plates and more importantly a cheeseboard. We’ve popped in here a …

Journeyman Cafe

Journeyman is another cafe that has been on our hit list for way too long but always seemed to slip through the net. We walk past it, kept seeing it from a tram window and occasionally on Instagram and yet still ignored it. Until Sunday. When I finally got my way and forced Jonny to take me for breakfast before that little boxing fight you may have heard about. I already knew what I wanted before we even walked through the door. Yep I know it’s boring but I have been dreaming about a Smashed Avocado literally all week (simple pleasures) And these guys do their smashed avo with hummus. Yes please. I did almost cheat on my decision because there were so many other things I wanted, this is a strong menu, more of an excuse to return I suppose. Jonny on the other hand decided on the Pulled pork Benedict in under 60 seconds. I’ve grabbed a takeaway coffee here a few times and my soy latte again did not disappoint. Mr coffee …

Manchester Press

I think we owe Manchester Press an apology, this place has been on our hit list for over a year now yet every time we are deciding on somewhere to go for Brunch it always got overlooked until today we finally ended up giving it a go and we loved it. Shame on us for not trying it out sooner, the guys do a great bagel and I found a new favourite dish. Do you do what we do and keep a running list of places to try out on your phone? Every time I hear someone talking about a decent meal or see a picture on Instagram that makes my mouth water it goes straight on the list. Can’t risk forgetting and missing out on a good meal right? And Manchester Press has been a solid member of this list for way too long and I don’t really have a good reason for why it took us so long. Blame all those other brunch places for luring us in with all those fancy options …

Top Paddock

You’re probably thinking, ‘O look another brunch post’. But what can you do when there’s so many places crying out to be visited and we will happily volunteer to eat our way around Melbourne or any place for that matter. First things first though is getting to grips with the local places near by and luckily for us one of these places is the very popular Top Paddock. And by popular I mean a good 40 minute wait outside on the curb popular. I always think a queue outside a place can almost be a bad thing, it’s obviously good because clearly it means the place is popular but then it builds up your expectations which is dangerous because then you’re expecting big things and the slightest fault and you’re let down. Just me? But luckily Pillar of Salt are well prepared for the constant crowds for brunch. The lone barista was serving up coffees quicker than people were ordering, Jonny was suitably impressed and the coffee passed his critical taste test. One tick. The …

Pillar of Salt

I don’t really think Australia does lunch. Brunch yes. Dinner yes. But lunch not so much. I only realised this when we were trying to think of somewhere to go and I was stuck. I can give you plenty of places for all the Smashed Avocados and Benedict’s you could dream of but for a really good lunch date mmm not so much. In fact I don’t think we’ve really ever done lunch. So obviously that had to change. Of course laziness and hunger led us straight to a nearby cafe that we have been meaning to try out for brunch. Typical. But it was worth it because Pillar of Salt smashed it and is now our first proper lunch spot.   The café itself has the simple, industrial look that’s everywhere right now, lots of brick walls, quirky lights but it’s the courtyard out the back you want to head straight for. Grab a booth, sit back and order their Virgin Mary whilst you look through the menu. It’s a good way to start. Of …

Make a date for Drugstore Espresso

If Drugstore Espresso was a person, putting it simply you’d want to be friends with them. It’s like that kid who came into school one day wearing his dads bomber jacket and absolutely nailed it. A slick ease we can only dream of, you know the one. The whole vibe here is cool without the try-hard, from the casual industrial decor, to the 90’s hip hop your boyfriends going to claim he can rap along to and don’t even get me started on the staff. This is the type of cafe you’d want to own or at least have a mate that does so you can excuse spending your days sprawled out front in the sun working through the deli cabinet, coconut in hand. Failing this you can clearly do this anyway. Last week I went three days in a row. We are hooked. The breakfasts here are unbelievable, we are attempting to slowly work our way through the menu, because it’s instant food envy every time someone elses meal goes past. Every time I go with the intention to order something new but the Berry Beet …
